My Loose Thread Over Erin Scarum, but Definitely Not “Normal” Over “Straight”

I’m finding this month’s theme, “It’s complicated,” very complicated. As in, I don’t know what to say about this, at a loss for words. And see? That’s my problem right there. It’s hard not to apply, as duly instructed by our editor (as you may or may not know), myself into this complication, the complicated situation, the whatever.
And so, here is a list of things—my Top 15!—that I may or may not find complicated, things that you may as well, and therefore, I give myself a sort-of passing grade:

  1. Speaking and writing in the German language
  2. The acronyms EBITDA and WYSIWIG
  3. The fact that Bob Marley’s “Three Little Birds” almost always makes someone you know, someone who may or may not be writing this, cry every fucking time, and not necessarily in a good way, and he or she thinks this may not be the true intention of said song
  4. The Inka Grings/Linda Bresonik/Holger Fach fiasco, and Inka and Linda’s relationship as it exists today (discuss)
  5. Applying the possessive to the band name Sunn O)))—Sunn O)))’s
  6. Finding Harum Scarum’s old lead singer Erin without knowing her last name, thinking “Erin Scarum” should do
  7. Job searching in this shithole economy
  8. Writing “job searching” and knowing three of your co-workers that also are 30pov.com posters could be reading this—one, of course, being your boss (your AWESOME boss)
  9. The intricate ways and means that the U.S. economy entered “shithole” status
  10. The balancing part of v-sit extend and flex
  11. You know what? Sunn O)))’s music in general
  12. Finding Franziska Nickel, but not anymore! (Oh, schwören Franziska, sobald ich erlerne, wie man auf Deutsch über dem Niveau eines drei Einjahres, ich spricht und schreibt, dass ich Sie aus Ihrem netten roten Windbreaker heraus anflehe.)
  13. And while we’re talking about him, Dennis Cooper’s My Loose Thread
  14. Maintaining a “healthy” relationship with a woman who is “normal” but not “straight”
  15. Finishing what you started, like Top 15 lists

    I'll take #15 for $200 Bob . . . . By the time I'm at the "almost completed" part, I'm ready done . . . even when sometimes the job isn't completed yet… (see editor of 30pov . . . she will explain . . . SORRY lee!!)
    Oh… and yes… shit hole economy….

  2. Jason Jason says:

Great piece, Angela! Well, to be frank, I got busy as I was reading–life with kids, don't you know–so I only made it to Point No. 6. Part of me wants to get back to this and read the rest, but odds are high I'll just embrace the greatness I already read and call it a day. Anyway, I'll see you at work. You'll be there, right? RIGHT?!?!

the great thing about this list is that i've read it several times and, each time, i've discovered something new. you may have converted me to list-blogging, angela…

Nice one Ang. I think my favorite is "The Inka Grings/Linda Bresonik/Holger Fach fiasco." I have no idea what this is referring to, so I googled it; everything was in German and all I could make out was "Das bizzare."
Good luck with the job search!

  4. Avatar angelatav says:

Thanks, Barry! "Das bizzare" is really all you need to know.

  5. Avatar McKnight says:

Yeah, I'm also finding the "It's Complicated" theme, um, complicated. No worries though, I have 8 days to write it… oh wait, it goes up on midnight of the 7th, I'm doomed!

  6. BB222 BB222 says:

Damn, that's a well placed doomed!

  7. Avatar angelatav says:

    So, so well placed! Outrageous!

  8. Avatar enid says:

Hm, yes. The "Three Little Birds" phenomenon. How does one explain it? That song could also possibly upset this humble reader, but maybe it does not. Why should it upset us? I have no idea or maybe I only cannot remember.

  9. Avatar angelatav says:

It's official, then: I hate Bob Marley.

  10. Avatar WreckedUm says:

Glad to hear I'm not the only one worried about it being complicated-but-not-about-me.
I identify most with #15 (i couldn't read a couple of the others to the end before moving to the next one on the list). Art projects, drawings, stories, half painted walls, carpet partially taken up, a garage only halfway rebuilt…most of my life is half finished.

  11. Angela, I thought I knew who your boss was, but now I'm certain that I don't. Should've known I'd guessed wrong, because that guy sucks it. {Oh well…}
Great list…I find every damn item you've listed to be utterly complicated.

  12. Avatar angelatav says:

POOP, YOU'RE NOT SUPPOSED TO SAY THAT OUT LOUD! I HAVE DOGS TO FEED!

  13. Avatar D. Pasquarelli says:

I find symbolic logic quite complicated and yet so beautifully simple at the same time.

    • Avatar llxt says:

david, you seem sad not be right on this month's theme…and we are {still} sad not to have you. however, you can still write on this theme, you know!!! (just not for us)

  14. Avatar Rosie says:

I have decided the most complicated thing for me today…is plotting my revenge against you for getting "Three Little Birds" stuck in my head…thanks!

  15. Avatar Karen says:

    I don't really know what #12 says, but I'm sure I agree!

  16. me too i have to eat, jjaja

angelatav About angelatav

On the eve of her 30th birthday, Angela Tavares found black metal, and life has been awesomely grim ever since. When she’s not walking the forests on cold winter nights or crafting inverted crosses with twigs and twine, she’s writing a novel, like everyone else you know. On an unrelated note, she talks for every animal she meets, a habit she’s finding hard to quit, and loves Greek yogurt.
