My Season Finale.

I just finished watching Avatar, the newest film from James Cameron (Terminator, Titanic, etc…) and I loved every frame, every second of it touched me unlike a film has in at least a few years and it changed my mind about movies, completely.

Wait, let me back up.

Ever since I saw The Last Starfighter as a kid, I’ve been a certified movie nut. I’m talking eight to fifteen movies a week, anyway I can get ’em. In the theater, on DVD, on TV, on Netflix, watching films has been a large part of my life for the last 25 years.

I decided next year, I wasn’t going to watch anymore movies or TV, at least until 2011. None, zero, zip, nada. An attainable and finite goal.

Movies have been letting me down. Each year out of the 300 plus films I take in, maybe three stand out as anything worth caring about or having paid to see. So, perhaps with a long enough break I could learn to appreciate movies again the way I used to, as opposed to feeling like I have been bamboozled out of and robbed heavily from both my time and money repositories, each of which are inexpressibly finite.

People, who know me think I’m crazy and say I won’t be able to do it.

They’re right. I’ve been watching anything labeled movie at face value, and the disappointment derived is from the lack of talent, production and an inability to successfully tell a story.

I need to be much more selective in my movie watching. I can’t watch a movie just because it stars Johnny Depp, granted Depp is a fairly safe bet. However, it’s still true.

So in 2010, I won’t be watching TV or just any movie that comes across my browser, but I will watch a select few, the super-elite movies. Will every movie I choose be stellar? Not likely. But, nor will I feel as bad when I have a miss or two.

And maybe, just maybe I’ll be able to recapture that feeling from when I loved movies, not unlike the little glimpse I got today while watching Avatar.

  1. My uncle called me about "Avatar," which he had seen and loved. So I saw it the next day and loved it, too, in spite of the violence.
If you haven't seen "Sense and Sensibility," it's wonderful. The same applies to "Jane Eyre," and I especially like the version with William Hurt. I would recommend "Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants," but you probably wouldn't like that (and it's not as good as the other two, anyway 🙂 ).

  2. I enjoyed all three movies you suggested throughly, I've seen Sisterhood at least three times in fact :).

    • Avatar llxt says:

wow, you really do like movies. you like movies the way the rest of like alcohol, which means you should be put into treatment. does anyone have the number to A&E?

  3. Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants is a work of art. It's a must-see.

  4. Thanks for this cool post. Anyway i found your blog on yahoo and find it very useful. I’ll be sure to come back again for more!

  5. The Parlay System is one of the most famous of betting systems that are commonly used in horse racing. Many have said that contrary to other sports betting systems, the Parlay System has a pyramiding effect on your profit which means your winnings are played on successive wagers.
