Making History

History and math were always my best subjects in school. Mainly because I have an astounding, elephant-like memory. (yes, tooting a horn there….however, this does not always come in handy…see: relationships) Being a short month, I bowed out of writing in February with a bit of a sob story.

One of my closest friends, one of two who I symbolically tattooed on my back with a star in December, fell 8 feet straight on to her head and broke her neck while practicing aerial dancing. She received hours of emergency surgery & was sent to the best rehabilitation facility in the US. With one telephone call from her mother, the (selfish) world as I knew it was shattered. One of the two most dependable, stable people in my life lost one of her loves (as a performance artist) and her ability to move her appendages.

The memories we have together are countless. She & I spent hours dancing to Debbie Gibson & arguing whether Edie Brickell (her) or Paula Abdul (me) were better as ten-year-olds back in the day. Clearly, she is far & away smarter than myself. She and Katie (other star) are the closest thing to unconditional love that I’ve ever experienced.

Rather than dwelling on the very personal history that we share, I’d like to shed some light on to what is a tragic situation.

This woman is making history.

Despite a dour prognosis, she has grabbed life by the balls & proven everyone wrong. In a mere two months (less than!) she is walking again, more or less able to do everything for herself, and has moved out of the rehabilitation facility & into her home. The end of January saw her hopefully at a recovery somewhere in the 12 to 18 month range which is obviously an understatement for her.

This woman is amazing, inspiring, and amazing. And while I savor the past & wonderful memories of yore (I’m a Cancer, it’s programmed in us), I encourage us all to go out & make history ourselves.

There is no better victory than proving history wrong.

You should put a halo around her star , she obviously has a guardian angel, and she will go on to bigger things in her life now, good for her.

tears in my eyes for her strength – know that those reading this can only hope to have her strength – and send it through the air to her.

People, like your friend, with the incredible strength of will, perseverance and character that she displays are forever on my envy and respect list. I would crumble under similar circumstances, she is both triumphant and inspirational. Thank you for sharing, and I hope to hear she reaches a full recovery well before her projected time frame. Inspirational piece.

Well said, emmy, and best of luck to your friend in her recovery, which she already seems to be making the best of.
